Planning for my final

After experimenting with using natural pigments and including them into samples, I came to the conclusion not to ise them in my final outcome. This is due to the lack of variety in colours I was able to achieve. I experimented with the possibility of using watercolours in my work but came to the conclusion that they went against my original concept of sticking to naturally found resources.
To achieve this I plan to use the natural pigment produced when dried flower petals bleed into the paper I make myself. This is achieved by embedding the dried flowers into my paper. By using the natural pigments I stick to using earthy and raw tones which they achieve, along with leaving the paper edges rough, giving the whole piece a more organic look.  On the right is the basic composition I plan to create, creating 5 columns of paper held together by clear thread, to give the illusion of it floating. When concidering the composition of my piece, I chose to use this formation as it looks less like a grid, and more like how bricks are layed. I also wanted my piece to look symetirical and balanced to look at. My original plan was to create only 3 columns, but I expect I will be able to make enough paper in the 15 hours to produce at least 30 sheets of paper which I will narrow down to 28 which will make up my final piece.

Next I had to concider what I would put on each sheet of paper. When looking for flowers to use in my final, I wanted mainly blue and pink tones, as those are the tones I'd used in my experiments. However, when it came time to collect resourses for my final I struggles to find any blue lilys. I found the larger lily petals gave the greatest effect when dried as the colour soaked into the veins and gave them a raw and natural look. I ran into a problem when trying to find these same flowers again, in the end I had to use purple lilys, which I felt would be a good substitute. Insted of using pink smaller petals, I decided orange/yellow would be a good. Yellow is opposite purple on the colour wheel and will complement the petals well. Once the orange petals have dried I assume they will looks some saturation and have a more yellow apprearance.

When concidering a layour, I decided the most random would look more natural. I did experiment with trying to make patterns out of the petals in composition but felt it pushes away the natural element I want to keep. I came to the conclusion of creating a composition like the one on the left, as it feels random and gives a more natural feel. The green boxes represent paper which will have leaves, or small green patches, without any petals. The orange boxes represent the orange flower petals and the purple boxes represent the larger purple lily petals. I wanted to incluse some piece of paper without any leaves on to break up the rows of flowers, and give a variety of embeded leaves and flowers to look at.

I had to concider how I would plan on presenting this piece also, and where to display it. I thought by using clear threat to suspent the paper, it would give it the illusion os floating, giving it an airy feel, which links into the natural concept I've chosen. I did some maths to calculate the size of my piece and the meanurements to use when stringing the paper together.
Each sheet of paper is aprox. 21cmx15cm, when hung in a column they'll be 10cm apart. This means a 6 sheet column will be aprox. 176cm tall. A 5 sheet column will be 145cm tall. When concidering the width of my piece, I want each column hung 10cm apart, with 5 columns at 15cm width that will total 115cm wide.

When breaking down how I plan to do my final, I will use the first week to make the paper, and the second to refine and finalize the layout.  Over the 15 hours, I will need to dry flower petals, make paper (some of which will have leaves embedded and some petals) let the paper dry, and string together the pieces in an orderly fashion. In my evaluation I will reproduce this table with any adjustments I made to my piece and if I chose to work at different times.

The flowers I plan on using are lilys (purple) and Alstroemeria (orange/red). I also plan to press some orange carnations, as they posess a vibrant orange tone which I feel will remain once dried and pressed. To speed up the pressing process, I plan to iron out the petals/flowers to remove exess moisture and to speed up the drying time. I'll be using a flower press to help me in this process.
